Dr. Peter Stewart graduated from the
University
of
Queensland
in 1973 and began General Medical Practice in
Queensland
. Following an inspirational meeting with Professor Fred Hollows, Dr Stewart began his training in Ophthalmology in Prof. Hollows’ department at the Prince of Wales Hospital in
Sydney
.
Dr. Stewart was one of the first ophthalmologists on the
Sunshine
Coast
when he began private practice in 1986. He had a dream to establish a team of eye specialists in cataract, retinal, oculo-plastic and refractive surgery, and link this with a Day Surgery facility. Six years after commencing practice, Peter built the Sunshine Coast Day Surgery, which incorporated consulting rooms for general Ophthalmic practice on the upper floor. In the intervening years, Dr. Stewart has assembled a team of seven eye surgeons, with varied subspecialty interests. In 2006 Dr. Stewart replicated this model in Hervey, Bay QLD.
Dr. Stewart was one of the pioneers of ultrasound phacoemulsification for cataract removal in
Australia
in the late 1980’s, which he then married with flexible intraocular lens implants in the early 1990’s . In 1995 Dr. Stewart became the first surgeon in
Australia
to perform LASIK eye surgery. In 1996 Peter opened the first Laser Sight Centre in Maroochydore, then subsueqenutly expanded to
Brisbane
, and the Gold Coast as well as national franchise Laser Sight clinics in
Sydney

Melbourne
,
Perth
and
Hobart
